Bunk beds are really fun to have but they can also be dangerous if not used properly.  If you are thinking about getting a bunk bed, then check out these tips first.

First, print off the federal bunk bed safety guidelines and.  They change every so often and sometimes retailers will want you to think that the model they are showing you is up to date with all bunk bed safety features.  Just because a salesman says it is doesn’t mean that it is.  They can be very helpful but they don’t always know the most recent information about the product they are selling.

If you have young children, ones that are younger than the teenage years, get bunk bed guard rails.  Make sure that they are really good and sturdy and will support your child if she rolls a lot during the night.  If your child has a history of rolling off the bed, get them guard rails too, even if they are older.

Make sure that the bunk bed is pushed all the way to the wall.  Children have gotten caught in between the bed, in normal beds too, and have died.  Put guard rails up on both sides if it makes you feel more comfortable.  Most bunk beds only come with one but you can always buy more.

Sometimes the mattress foundation comes off.  It is usually caused by someone kicking the bottom of the top bunk mattress from the bottom bunk.  Tell your children that kicking the mattress is not allowed and explain why.  Check the bed every night to make sure that the mattress and the support beams are in place.

When you are getting a new mattress for the bunk bed, make sure that the mattress is going to be the perfect fit.  Most manufacturers sell replacement mattresses for the bunk beds so try buying one from them.  The mattresses have to be a specific size or there will be too much of a gap in between the bed and mattress.  It can cause suffocation.

Children love jumping off the bed and that is especially true for bunk beds.  Make sure that you buy a bunk bed that has a ladder and that your children know to climb up and down when getting into bed.  It will save a lot of injuries and from your children hurting themselves.  Most bunk beds come with ladders, but if yours doesn’t then make sure you buy one or you can even make one by getting some materials from your local hardware store.  Have your child help and he will even want to use the ladder.

When you buy a bunk bed you have to be very careful.  They are really fun for children and it makes them feel more adventurous.  Just make sure that you warn them and tell them that any disobeying of the rules will not be tolerated.  You have to warn them because there are dangers that they might not realize or think would really harm them.  Just use these bunk bed safety tips when buying your next bunk bed.
